Training drills for volleyball are designed to help improve your serving, defense and overall footwork. While many training drills involve the entire team, numerous drills focus on strengthening specific parts of your game, allowing you to improve the parts of your game that need the most work.

Serving Relay

The serving relay drill is designed to help improve your serving as well as your overall fitness. Divide your team up into two teams. Have one team get in a straight line in the right serving corner of the court while the other team gets into the left serving corner. On your coach's whistle, have the first players in each line serve the ball. If the serve is in bounds, have the players run and retrieve their balls and pass them to the second players in line. If they miss the serve, they must grab the ball and serve again. The first team to have all players hit an in-bounds serve and retrieve the ball wins.

Four-Person Pepper Drill

The four-person pepper drill is designed to warm up your arms and legs in preparation of a game. Get into a group of four players and split off into groups of two. Have two players stand on one side of the net while the other two stand on the other side. With one player standing in front of the other, have the player in back pass the ball to the player in front. The player in front must then set the ball while the original passer tips the ball over the net to one of the awaiting players. Once the player on the other side receives the tip, they must start the drill over on their side. Before completing the drill, have each player take a turn at being the passer and the server.

Bleacher Jump

The bleacher jump drill is designed to improve your vertical leaping ability while on the volleyball court. Have your entire team line up in a line in front of the first row of bleachers. On your coach's whistle, jump off of both feet and land on the first bleacher row. As soon as your feet balance on the first step, jump backward and land on both of your feet. Continue to jump up and down until fatigued.

Tip Top Passing Drill

The tip top passing volleyball drill is designed to improve your passing skills and technique. Grab a partner and stand a few feet away from each other. Hold a volleyball in the fingertips of both hands and pass it to your partner. Have your partner catch it with his fingertips and pass it back to you. Do not allow the ball to touch your palms throughout the entire exercise. As you improve, increase the distance between you and your partner.
