The Best Motorcross Bikes

As you ride over hills and through rough dirt tracks, motocross doesn't just create a fun ride -- it can also provide an effective workout for your legs and upper body as you try to maintain balance on the bike. If you're either new to the sport or want to add to your existing motocross bike collection, there are a variety of options.

KTM 250 XC-F 2011

If you're looking for a new 250cc four-stroke motocross bike, this is one to consider, says "Dirt Rider" magazine. The magazine praised the bike's thin design factor, saying it rides and feels like more expensive bikes. Additional features include high-performing gear ratios that work for everything from trail crawls to technical races, and grippy tires that help your handling on loose gravel and dirt. You can also get the same bike in a 350cc version.

Yamaha YZ450F 2010

In its motocross shootout testings, "Motorcycle USA" magazine gave the Yamaha motocross bike one of its highest ratings, saying it "blew us away with its high-end and well-sorted suspension." The magazine noted the Yamaha's powerful engine and sleek chassis, saying it gave a light feel to the ride. Additional features include an engine air filter near the steering head. In contrast, many motocross bikes put this intake near the rear, which makes it vulnerable to dirt, grit and other kickback debris from the tires.

Kawasaki KX250F 2011

"Transworld Motocross" magazine recommends the 250cc motocross bike from Kawasaki, noting the manufacturer added 30 new components or features. One standout feature was the bike's electronic starter. This helps with everything from an enhanced fuel injection, to faster starting -- it takes just one kick to get the engine revving -- to easier warm-up so you can hit the motocross track quicker and with higher running performance. Additional features include an aluminum fuel pump, which helps bring the total weight of the bike down, plus a twin-spar aluminum frame that enhances rigidity.

Suzuki RM-Z450 2011

Suzuki's 2011 motocross model is praised by "Motocross Action" magazine, which recognized the bike's easy starting process, to its handlebars, to its "razor sharp" handling. Additional features include sufficient suspension for vibration dampening, customizable fork legs that let you adjust handling and an exceptional dyno curve for its engine.
