Herbs That Help Calcium Absorption

Calcium is the mineral found in greatest quantities in the human body. Calcium is necessary for strong bones and teeth, for proper muscle contractions, including the beating of your heart, for normal nerve functioning and for normal blood clotting. Calcium is also needed to prevent osteoporosis. A number of calcium supplements are available, but the best sources of calcium are healthy foods. No amount of calcium in your diet will help, however, if your body cannot absorb and use the calcium.

Alfalfa

Alfalfa is a good source of vitamin D. You can drink alfalfa tea or take alfalfa tablets.

Dandelion

Dandelion is a good source of silicon, magnesium, calcium and boron. You can eat dandelion leaves, drink dandelion tea or take dandelion capsules.

Horsetail

Horsetail is a good source of vitamin D and silicon. Silicon found in horsetail is easier for the body to absorb than other forms. You can drink horsetail tea or take horsetail capsules. Because horsetail has a diuretic effect, be sure to drink plenty of water. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and people who have heart or kidney conditions should not take horsetail.

Nettle

Nettle is a good source of vitamin D, magnesium and calcium. You can drink nettle tea, or take nettle extract or capsules.

Parsley

Parsley is a good source of vitamin D and boron. You can make a delicious beverage by blending fresh parsley with chilled pineapple juice, then straining and drinking; pineapple juice also contains digestive enzymes which help your body absorb calcium and other nutrients.
