Panic attacks are defined as the sudden onset of anxiety, accompanied by increased heart rate, sweating and nausea. According to the Mayo Clinic, the actual cause of panic attacks is unknown however heredity and biochemical functioning in the brain may play a role. Regardless of cause, panic attacks can be debilitating for some people, increasing in severity and decreasing their ability to fully engage in work and recreational activities. Prescription medications used to treat panic attacks are often effective in decreasing their incidence and severity. However, they also tend to have side effects such as fatigue. Fortunately, there are herbal treatments for panic attacks that can have fewer side effects. Of course, you should talk to your doctor before using herb products to deal with panic attacks.
Step 1
Take 150 to 300 mg. of kava kava in capsule form, one to three times a day as needed for symptoms of panic attacks. The University of Maryland Medical Center, UMMC, explains that the herb kava kava is valued and used for its ability to produce feelings of relaxation. It adds that kava kava has been found in a number of studies to be an effective treatment for anxiety, which is a symptom often experienced during a panic attack. Taking kava kava regularly may also help to prevent symptoms of anxiety from deteriorating into a full blown panic attack. This can be helpful, especially if your panic attacks have caused you to stop enjoying your favorite activities. Get your doctor's approval before you take kava kava.
Step 2
Take 600 mg. of the herb valerian in capsule form daily. According to the National Institutes of Health, valerian is often used in naturopathic medicine to treat insomnia and nervousness. Panic attacks and panic disorder, the clinical term for this condition, can cause significant sleep disruption and insomnia. Lack of adequate sleep or disruption in the quality of your sleep can make panic attacks occur more frequently. This can become a cycle of panic and anticipatory anxiety that can lead to worsening of symptoms and impaired ability to concentrate. Valerian appears to be effective in helping people sleep with less reported side effects than prescription medications.
Step 3
Drink a cup of passionflower tea three to four times a day. Passionflower, according to the University of Maryland is used to treat symptoms of anxiety and insomnia. The relaxing effects of this herb appear to be milder than those of valerian or kava kava, which may be beneficial if your panic attacks aren't severe. Researchers speculate that passionflower increases brain levels of the neuro-chemical gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA, as it's more commonly known. Increased levels of GABA elicits feelings of relaxation by decreasing the activity of your brain cells that can lead to a panic attack.
Step 4
Take 300 to 500 mg. of the herb lemon balm three times a day. Lemon balm, according to the University of Maryland is a plant in the mint family which appears to have calming properties. Lemon balm is also used to treat indigestion, insomnia and poor appetite. Research has shown an association between improvement in insomnia and anxiety with administration of a combination of lemon balm with other herbs such as valerian. If you experience panic attacks, consider trying an herbal tea or extract that contains lemon balm and other calming herbs.
Step 5
Take 300 mg. of St. John's wort in capsule form daily. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center explains that St. John's wort is a popular herb used for treating mild to moderate depression. Individuals who suffer from depression may experience panic attacks as well and generalized anxiety. Taking St. John's wort may be an effective approach to both depression and panic and anxiety it can cause. Speak with your doctor before using this herb, as it has been found to cause interactions with many different medications.
