You may experience a rapid heart rate, or tachycardia, for several reasons. Stress and anxiety, physical exertion and even some of the ingredients in the food you eat, can all contribute to an increase in your heart rate. You might not normally be aware of an increased heart rate, but if you begin to experience symptoms, such as chest pain or shortness of breath, there are ways to lower your heart rate and alleviate these symptoms.
Step 1
Assess your environment. Remove yourself from a stressful situation if it makes you anxious or stressed. Slow down and take a break if you are physically exerting yourself. Find a quiet area and focus on your breathing. Breathe slowly and deeply to calm your heart rate.
Step 2
Drink some water. This is particularly important if you are overheated, have recently had a bout of diarrhea or vomiting or if you are experiencing a fever. Dehydration causes an increased heart rate, and maintaining adequate hydration may resolve it.
Step 3
Avoid stimulant ingredients in your food and beverages. Ingredients like caffeine, particularly if you are sensitive to them, can cause a rapid increase in heart rate. Medications, such as decongestants and other cold medicines, also commonly contain stimulant ingredients. The same is true of many herbal preparations, as well.
Step 4
Hold off on your next cigarette until your symptoms resolve. Cigarettes contain the stimulant nicotine, which increases both blood pressure and heart rate.
