Many quick weight loss diets have made an enemy of carbohydrates. These diets usually feature a diet plan that severely restricts your intake of bread, pasta, potatoes and even fruit. Eating healthy does require moderation when it comes to eating most foods; however, it's important not to vilify them. Carbohydrates are an essential source of energy for your body and can be part of a healthy diet -- even if you're trying to lose weight. You just have to know what carbs provide the best nutrition for your body.

Legumes

Legumes, which includes beans, are some of the healthiest foods you can incorporate in your diet. They're loaded with fiber, a type of carbohydrate that can't be digested. Beans also have a low glycemic load, meaning they won't cause the sudden blood sugar spikes that some carbs do when you consume them, such as white rice and candy. Legumes are a good source of protein as well, which along with the fiber keeps you feeling full longer. Good choices include pinto, black and kidney beans.

Vegetables

You may not think about veggies being good sources of carbohydrates, but several fiber-rich options offer vital nutrients for your body. Some of the best options include artichokes, broccoli, peas and turnip greens, according to MayoClinic.com. Keep in mind that while potatoes with the skin are an excellent carb source, they can raise your blood sugar more than some breads or pasta. Try to limit them in your diet.

Fruits

Some fad diets require you to limit or even eliminate fruit because they are considered simple carbs. Simple carbohydrates contain one to two sugars. Several unhealthy foods are also in this category including soda and candy. These foods are loaded with added sugar. Fruit differs in that it contains natural sugar called fructose, which has little impact on blood sugar. Good fruits to add to your diet include raspberries, strawberries, pears with skin and apples with skin. Berries are also a major source of antioxidants that prevent cell damage from free radicals.

Whole Grains

Don't fall for the misconception that all bread, pasta and rice are bad for you. The whole-grain varieties of these foods are among some of the healthiest carbohydrates. These include brown rice, whole-wheat bread, oatmeal, bulgar, barley and whole-wheat pasta. They're low in fat and provide many essential nutrients, such as magnesium and potassium. Oatmeal is a healthy carb source that can help lower your LDL, or bad, cholesterol level. Try adding fruit to your oatmeal to up the fiber and nutritional benefits even more.
