Genital herpes is caused by an infection of the herpes simplex type 2 virus, or HSV-2. It is usually transmitted through unprotected sex and your chances of contracting HSV-2 increases with the number of sexual partners you have. Once you have become infected with HSV-2, you may experience outbreaks of genital herpes throughout your life. Anti-viral medicines will not cure genital herpes, but they may lessen their severity and reduce the frequency of outbreaks. Some herbs have anti-viral properties and may help to heal herpes lesions, although evidence to prove they work is limited. Get medical advice before using them.

Aloe

Topical use of the herb, aloe, may improve genital herpes, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. However, an early review of clinical data by B.K. Vogler and E. Ernst published in the October 1999 issue of the "British Journal of General Practice" concluded that although it might be effective for genital herpes, its clinical effectiveness has not been clearly defined. Furthermore, more up-to-date studies are lacking. Topical aloe use is likely safe, says RxList, although in rare cases, it may cause a hypersensitivity reaction.

Siberian Ginseng

Siberian ginseng, or Eleutherococcus, may reduce the incidence and severity of genital herpes, UMMC notes. However, studies examining the role of this herb in the treatment of genital herpes are lacking. MedlinePlus states that short-term use of this herb is likely safe, but side effects may include drowsiness, anxiety and muscle spasms.High doses may elevate your blood pressure. This herb is contraindicated in a number of conditions including heart problems, diabetes and hormone-sensitive conditions. It also interacts with several drugs, including lithium, so get medical advice before using it.

Lemon Balm

Research by G. Mazzanti and colleagues published in a 2008 issue of "Natural Product Research" found that lemon balm, also known as Melissa officinalis, may reduce the effects of the HSV-2 virus. The author conclude that their observations support the use of lemon balm as a treatment for genital herpes lesions. RxList notes that lemon balm seems to be safe for most adults.

Other Measures

The UMMC website notes several other natural medicine approaches that may help to alleviate genital herpes, including homeopathy. Although the efficacy of specific homeopathic therapies has not been proven, UMMC says that several remedies, including Natrum muriaticum and Sepia, may be beneficial for genital herpes. Get advice from a qualified homeopathic practitioner before using them.
