Swim caps come in a variety of colors patterns and materials. Manufacturers make Lycra swim caps from fabrics similar to the Lycra and spandex blends they use for swimsuits. Lycra is a stretchy textile that stays on your head even if you swim fast, but unlike latex or silicone caps, Lycra caps do not keep the water from permeating through to your hair and scalp.

Safety

Getting a good workout swimming means you need to see where you are going. Nothing takes you "out of the zone" faster than crashing into another swimmer or getting entangled in lane lines. Lycra swim caps keep your hair out of your eyes and face, letting you see well and breathe easy. Brightly colored or boldly patterned caps make you visible to other swimmers or boaters when you head out into the open water for your workouts.

Comfort

Lycra caps fit smoothly and snugly on your head, but they do not pull or snag your hair. Young kids wear these caps because they are comfortable and last longer than thin latex caps. Lycra caps keep you cooler because they let the water through. You might get a bit more drag in the water because of their permeability, but for average fitness swimmers, the difference is not significant. Keeping masses of curly tresses tucked into a Lycra cap does help you "streamline" in the water, so you expend less energy moving through it.

Protection

Lycra caps protect your hair and scalp from sun exposure and damaging UV rays when you swim outdoors. They also provide a good alternative to latex caps if you have allergies to latex materials. Caps made from Lycra cost more than latex caps, but they can last longer: The material is as durable as your swimsuit. You should rinse out your cap with clear cool water after every workout and allow it to dry before storing it.

Considerations

You might find the sensation of swimming with a permeable Lycra cap strange if you used silicone or other waterproof caps before. Cool water streaming over your head is pleasant in summer, but when fall arrives, consider doubling up on caps. Put on a Lycra cap over your hair for comfort, then cover it with a latex one for warmth and insulation.
