Safety helmets are recommended for a multitude of sports activities, from bicycling to snowboarding. The Institute for Highway Insurance says that of the 714 fatal bicycle accidents in 2008, about 91 percent involved people who were not wearing helmets. Helmets need to be properly fitted to aid in injury prevention.

Sizing

Helmet sizes include extra small, small, medium, large and extra large, with some brands offering XX-large. The exact diameter of each size varies and depends on the manufacturer's size charts. The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute has a sizing chart to help you find the proper fit.

Sizing

Trying a helmet on is the best way to gauge if the size is right for you. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends measuring your head to get an approximate size. A helmet should fit snugly and should not rock from side to side.

Adjustments

Position a helmet low and level on your forehead. Adjust buckles, chin straps and side straps so the final fitting is snug. The NHTSA says a properly fitted helmet should pull down on your head when you yawn.

Considerations

When purchasing a safety helmet, make sure you choose one that has been tested and meets safety standards issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Do not use a helmet that has been in an accident.
