Depression is a medical disorder that may make it hard to function in daily life and may impact relationships, jobs, self esteem and sexuality. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports that in America, more than 6 million men have depression each year. Take action when your husband is depressed because the illness may make it hard for him to pursue the help he needs.
Step 1
Talk to a spouse who is depressed about what he is feeling and what actions he has taken to get help. If he has not done so already, tell him you want him to call the doctor. Have this discussion at a time when you are alone together and have time to talk calmly.
Step 2
Give your husband a notebook to use as a journal to write about his feeling about depression. Writing is very therapeutic when depressed. Tell him you would like to discuss his journal entries with him at any time when he feels like sharing thoughts about what he is experiencing.
Step 3
Present your husband with brochures and facts about depression. Tell him that depression is not a sign of weakness. Ask him to tell you immediately if he feels his depression is leading to a crisis state.
Step 4
Watch your husband for signs he is using drugs or alcohol to find relief from depression. Men may use alcohol or drugs to "self medicate" when experiencing symptoms of depression. They may also hesitate to seek treatment for depression or to tell their spouse, family, or friends about the depression they are feeling. Risky behavior also sometimes increases when a man is experiencing depression.
Step 5
Encourage your husband to schedule an appointment with a therapist to discuss his depression diagnosis. If he does not schedule the appointment, schedule one for him and drive him there. Depression may be treated with therapy and with medication. Some medications may cause sexual difficulties, so talk to a doctor about choosing a medication that will allow normal sexual function.
Step 6
Encourage a depressed man to exercise. Exercise helps the body get rid of stress and also works to combat the gloom of depression. Go for a walk with your husband; exercising with a partner will help a depressed man stick with an exercise regimen.
Step 7
Call the doctor immediately if your husband is talking about suicide. Even if your husband does not want the doctor to know, it is crucial that the doctor know if the depression has become so severe your husband is making comments about suicide.
Step 8
Modify his diet to avoid high fat foods and to decrease sodium intake. As overall health improves, depression may start to improve too. Also add foods that boost the mood to the diet too. Some foods known to help the mood include: dark chocolate, sesame seeds, Brazil nuts, whole grains, beans, sea food, bananas, spinach, berries and oranges.
Step 9
Start a log in a notebook to track all symptoms of depression your husband talks about or that you observe. Bring this notebook to all medical appointments to discuss the treatment of your husband's depression.
