Group fitness leaders conduct exercise classes at health clubs, the YMCA, private fitness centers, churches, synagogues and community center. Bureau of Labor statistics indicate that the fitness industry may experience a faster than average growth by 2018, but fitness leader certification is a prerequisite for employment. Certification programs have different time frames and price structures, but some carry more weight than others.
History
The Canadian YMCA introduced the first fitness leader certification in 1974. While the fitness trend hit America by storm during that time frame, the first American fitness leadership certification was not created until 1983, when the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America developed the first Primary Group Exercise Instructor certification. Two years later, the American Council on exercise introduced another certification program. Hundreds of certification programs now flood the fitness market.
Accredidation
Despite the wide range of available certification programs, only some will open doors to all fitness industry markets. In 2003, the International Health, Racquet
and Sports Club Association suggested that club managers only hire exercise leaders with certifications from organizations accredited through the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, now called the Institute for Credentialing Excellence. Many of the accredited organizations focus on personal training, but some offer group exercise leader programs.
Selecting a Program
Different fitness facilities accept different certifications. YMCA instructors, for example, must have YMCA certification, even though the National Commission for Certifying Agencies does not accredit their program. Before you select a certification program, contact the facility where you want to work, and ask which programs they accept. Continuing education credits are another concern. Most programs require re-certification every two years, during which you must take approved courses. Most programs will accept continuing education workshops from other organizations, but some do not. Some organizations, such as the American Council on Exercise and the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America offer online quizzes, which count toward re-certification.
Workshops and Study Materials
Unless you have a physical education degree, select a certification program that provides study materials, mock tests and multi-day certifications. Group exercise leadership certifications usually require you to lead a mock class. Get your video camera, recruit your friends and do a few practice sessions before you take the exam. If you have test anxiety, select a program that allows you to take the exam online. Some organizations will not give you a certification card unless you have proof of CPR certification, so get that done before you take your fitness leadership test.
Program Features
Most programs begin with a basic anatomy and muscle movement overview, as well as in-depth information about the physiology of aerobic exercise. Leadership skills, group dynamics, cuing techniques and vocal techniques are an essential part of the certification process. The certifying instructor also teaches you how to analyze musical beats per minute, select appropriate music for each type of class, choreograph aerobic routines and design muscle toning and stretching programs.
