Proctozone Side Effects

Proctozone is a topical cream that is used to treat minor pain, itching, swelling and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids or anal fissures. The ingredients include hydrocortisone and aloe vera, which work together to reduce redness, itching and swelling and assist in soothing and healing the wound. As with any medication, Proctozone has the potential for side effects.

Common Side Effects

According to RxList.com, the most common side effects include infection, chronic trouble sleeping, increased hunger and nervousness. Side effects often occur at the site of treatment. These may include burning, itching or irritation. Drugs.com suggests the long term effects of corticosteroids to be skin atrophy and thinning. Other potential effects may be bleeding and bruising. Some allergic reactions at the site can include blistering, rash, irritation and hives.

Less Common Side Effects

Some digestive side effects may occur with the use of Proctozone, but RxList.com points out that they occur infrequently. Examples include bleeding of the stomach or intestines, osteoporosis, Cushing's syndrome and irregular periods. Individuals who experience these issues often have sensitivities to the corticosteroids contained in the medication.

Rare Side Effects

In rare instances, RxList.com suggests the potential for depression, muscle disease, increased pressure in the eyes, high blood pressure, cataracts, slow heartbeat, chronic heart failure, fluid in the lungs, hallucination and swelling of the abdomen. These effects, along with many others, are not likely to occur with normal use or in healthy individuals.
