A first base glove is unique to the position and different than all other gloves on a baseball team. A first base glove has a bigger pocket than most other gloves and features a rounded outer edge. It is designed to enable the first baseman to field his position more effectively. First basemen must field ground balls and line drives hit their way, take throws from infielders and pick offs from pitchers.
Step 1
Stand on the base with the edge of the foot on your throwing side in contact with the base. Hold the first base glove up to give a large target for the infielders to throw at.
Step 2
As the ball approaches, step out with your front foot and try to catch it in the middle of the pocket. Be sure to keep your other foot on the corner of the base.
Step 3
Scoop the ball out of the dirt if the throw is low and short-hops your glove. Move the glove toward the ball in a scooping motion, right in front of where it will hit the ground.
Step 4
Bend your knees and get behind the ball if the throw bounces in front of the base, but too far away for a short-hop. If you can't maintain contact with the base, try to catch the ball and then tag first base before the runner arrives.
Step 5
Utilize the size of the glove when fielding ground balls. Get in front of the ball with your knees bent and back straight. Use two hands if possible for support in case you bobble the ball with the first base glove.
