Shingles, a disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus, is a non-contagious skin rash appearing in older adults. Pain, burning and itching on one side of the face or body are signs of shingles. While there is no cure for it, those afflicted with the rash may find home remedies helpful for reducing the symptoms.
Stress Relief
Most people are aware of the adverse effects of stress on the body, weakening the immune system and causing insomnia and increased risks of colds and infections. According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can worsen the pain associated with shingles. To help reduce stress and minimize pain, get plenty of rest and use relaxation techniques to encourage respite. Music can be therapeutic, as well as light exercise, reading or working on an enjoyable hobby. These activities also allow you to focus on other things, helping distract you from your pain.
Cool Compresses/ Bathing
Blisters often accompany the painful, itchy shingles rash, giving you the urge to scratch, which can cause more irritation as the blisters break. To help reduce the itching and pain caused by the shingles rash while avoiding damaging the skin, apply a cool compress. A moist washcloth or cool bath are helpful methods for soothing the itching sensations caused by shingles. Adding colloidal oatmeal, an all-natural oatmeal preparation, can help moisturize and calm irritated skin. Aveeno oatmeal is a popular commercial product made with colloidal oatmeal for the treatment of various skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, poison ivy and chickenpox.
Pain Relievers
Depending on your level of pain, an over-the-counter pain remedy may help. You may even have some mild medications on hand in your medicine chest. Pain relievers like ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve) are appropriate for all kinds of aches and pains and may help you manage the discomfort.
Anti-Itch Lotions
To aid with itching caused by the shingles rash, anti-itch medications like calamine lotion are available over the counter and can be applied frequently. Other anti-itch remedies include oral medications like Benadryl, which contain diphenhydramine, an effective antihistamine that works by blocking the effects of histamine produced in the body.
