Jaundice is an easily observable sign of certain health problems, especially liver problems. Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin and eyes caused by an accumulation of bilirubin in your blood. Bilirubin, a yellow-brown substance, is the byproduct of red blood cell breakdown. Discuss procedures, alternatives treatments and risks with your physician before taking herbal remedies to treat your jaundice.

Identification

Bilirubin, a waste product of the breakdown of red blood cells, is usually removed from your bloodstream by your liver. If your liver is not functioning properly, bilirubin accumulates in your blood, causing your urine to become darker, your stools lighter and your skin and the whites of your eyes yellow. Jaundice may be caused by numerous conditions, including blood diseases, genetic syndromes, liver problems, blocked bile ducts, infections and certain medications.

Herbal Remedies

Herbs for jaundice may help cleanse your blood and liver, repair your liver and reduce your jaundice. Certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," notes that several herbs have been used to help treat jaundice, including burdock root, red clover, celandine, dandelion, black radish, oregano and milk thistle extract. Certain spices may also help cleanse your liver and reduce your jaundice, including coriander and turmeric.

A Popular Herb

Celandine is a popular herb for treating jaundice. According to master herbalist Ed Smith, author of "Therapeutic Herb Manual," celandine helps stimulate secretions from your liver and gallbladder and improves the inefficient function of glandular organs in your abdominal cavity. Celandine has been used to treat inflammation and congestion in the liver, gallbladder and spleen. The American Cancer Society notes that the herb has long been used to treat liver disease and digestive problems.

Considerations

Jaundice is a sign of an underlying health problem. Before using herbs or other treatment methods, visit your doctor for a thorough evaluation to help diagnose any underlying ailments. A blood test, liver biopsy or ultrasound may be required to determine your problem. Other therapies, in addition to herbal remedies, may also help reduce your jaundice and improve your health, including dietary changes and reducing the amount of alcohol you consume.
