Basketball backboards are important pieces of equipment used in professional leagues like the NBA, and in amateur sports like college and high school basketball as well. The standard layout for a basketball backboard does vary a bit through each level of the sport.

Dimensions

The standard measurements of a basketball backboard in the NBA and most college leagues is 6 feet horizontally and 3 1/2 feet vertically. The front facing surface should be flat with a rectangle marking and a metal ring or hoop. The rectangle should be centered behind the ring and be marked with a 2-inch wide line that measures 24 inches horizontally and 18 inches vertically. There should be two identical backboards placed on opposite sides of the court. The backboards should be transparent to allow spectators to see the players and shots.

The Ring or Hoop

In NBA and college play, the ring, or hoop, should be attached securely to the background at the base of the white rectangle and orange in color. It should parallel to the floor and be made of pressure-release metal and 18 inches in diameter. The inside edge of the ring should be 6 inches away from the backboard. The netting that hangs from the ring should be white and measure 15 to 18 inches in length. The cord for the netting should be between 30 and 120 thread count.

Styles

Most backboards are rectangle in shape, but some youth sports and amateur basketball backboards will be oval or other shapes. Professional leagues mostly use backboards made of tempered glass or fiberglass. The size and dimensions of the backboard will vary in some arenas for space issues and for level of play. Outdoor backboards will often be made of a more weather resistant material. Personal backboards for backyards and driveways are also available in cheaper materials like plastic. Many basketball organizations, especially the NBA, also have backboards with shot timer clocks attached that are visible by the players and officials.

Function

The main function of the backboard is to give players a surface to bounce the ball off when shooting. The rectangle box on the backboard is used as a target for shooters. Most often, a shot that hits inside this box will have a better chance of going into the hoop. The backboard also functions as a barrier to keep the ball from going off the court or into the crowd during shots. It also allows players a better chance of rebounding the ball on missed shots.
