How to Care for an Ear Ache

Earaches are often due to infection. The Mayo Clinic explains that the pain or aching is due to the blockage or swelling of the pathways that connect the middle ear to the nose. The fluid can settle in the middle part of the ear, causing pain and infection. In some cases, individuals may have an earache from exposure to extremely loud sounds or noise for long periods of time. Earaches can be cared for at home without medical intervention. In fact, antibiotics or medical treatment may only be used in severe or chronic ear problems.

Step 1

Take an over-the-counter (OTC) pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. You can take these throughout the day and night for a few days to relieve pain.

Step 2

Pour baby oil, mineral oil or essential oils into a dropper. Warm the oil by pouring hot water into a glass and resting the dropper, tip up, into the glass. Wait about a minute before placing two to three drops into the ear. You can also warm the whole bottle of oil in a glass of water and then pour it into the dropper if. Warming the bottle is recommended if it has its own dropper. You can repeat this method can two to three times per day.

Step 3

Cover the affected ear with a warm, wet wash cloth. The cloth does not need to be dripping wet, but the moist heat and oil can sooth the ear pain. Leave the compress on your ear for 20 minutes. Switch sides if necessary or repeat the procedure as often as necessary. Taking a hot shower may also provide relief.

Step 4

Sleep with your head elevated to promote drainage outward instead of deeper into the inner ear. This works for earaches caused by fluid buildup.
