Skateboard models used throughout the 1960s consisted of a flat construction. Over the years, the skateboard has evolved to feature a raised-design nose and tail. "Concave" refers to the steepness of the nose and tail. Dick's Sporting Goods notes that a steep concave aids in aggressive skateboarding tricks and maneuvers. A mellow concave remains ideal for beginners as it offers increased board control. Manufacturers typically stamp a number on the skateboard to indicate the degree of concave.
Step 1
Hold the skateboard horizontally in front of you. Examine the shape of the nose and tail. Compare numerous skateboard models to find the one with the steepest concave.
Step 2
Place the skateboard flat on a carpeted surface. Align your back foot on the tail with your front foot on the nose. Examine the angle of your feet to determine which board has the most concave.
Step 3
Locate the concave number found on the top of the skateboard. Compare the concave numbers of various skateboard models. Choose the skateboard with the highest number, as it will feature the most concave.
