Candida is a systemic fungal yeast overgrowth that may cause thrush, canker sores, sore throat, jock itch, diaper rash, vaginitis, and IBS-like symptoms, including constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating or heartburn.
Candida bacteria feed on sugar, so dramatic changes in diet may help starve the bacteria, clearing your system of too much yeast. As the yeast die-off you may experience flu-like symptoms, skin rashes or difficulty concentrating. Known as the Herxheimer reaction, the candida release toxic metabolic by-products as they die--your symptoms may get worse before they get better. This period may last one day to a full week.
Step 1
Avoid all added sweeteners, including all types of sugar, honey, molasses, corn syrup, Equal, Sweet-n-Low and Splenda. Because yeast feeds on sugar, even natural sugars must be eliminated. Fruits, fruit juices, dried fruits, all forms of dairy, alcoholic beverages and simple carbohydrates such as potatoes, breads and pastas made from white flour should be avoided.
Step 2
Eat fresh foods that you prepare at home. Many processed foods contain sugar or yeast. A diet that includes a variety of vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, eggs and uncured animal proteins will provide all the vitamins and nutrients your body needs without feeding the candida.
Step 3
Add foods that fight candida into your diet. Coconut oil is an antifungal that contains lauric and caprylic acids which fight candida. Other antifungals include garlic, onions, olive oil and pumpkin seeds. The Candida Diet website also recommends eating seaweed and ginger, which may help to detoxify your body.
