Fitness instructors teach of a variety of different courses- including aerobics, kickboxing, yoga and Pilates. With an expected 20 percent growth rate- according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,- becoming a fitness instructor is quickly becoming the career choice of many. As a fitness instructor, you are responsible for accurately and safely teaching individuals how to stay in shape. As a result, many requirements need to be met before you can obtain a job as a fitness instructor.

Education

A college education is not required to become a fitness instructor. However, it may give you the competitive edge you need to land a job as a fitness instructor. With more and more students majoring in exercise science and physical education, associates, bachelor's and masters degree instructors can be seen in fitness centers around the country. A fitness degree can sometimes be used in lieu of a certification. However, most fitness centers require certification in addition to a college education.

Safety

Fitness instructors are required to be able to react quickly in the event of a medical emergency during one of their classes. Fitness instructors must possess a current adult CPR certification- through an organization, such as the American Red Cross. Online CPR is generally not accepted unless there is an in-person practical skills examination to go along with the online course. Basic first aid is also recommended.

Certification

Few employers provide on the job training. A majority of fitness centers require employees to be certified by a nationally recognized organization prior to hiring. Organizations include the American College of Sports Medicine, National Academy of Sports Medicine, American Council on Exercise and the Aerobic and Fitness Association of America. Certification is usually through a written exam. A practical component may also be necessary depending upon certification.

Specialized Certifications

Certification through a nationally-recognized organization generally provides you with the ability to instruct aerobic and strength training classes. Special certifications are required to each classes such as yoga, Zumba and Pilates. Certifications for these courses generally include three-day workshops and demonstrations of competencies at the end of the workshop.

Continuing Education

Fitness instructors are generally required to completed continuing education courses. Classes may be online, in person or conducted in a workshop form. Often times, the fitness facility you are employed by will pay for your continuing education. Requirements for continuing education depend on the certifications you hold. Certifications are generally good for two years.
