1. No Excuses
"I don't have time,""I am too tired,""I have too much work to do." These are just some of the familiar excuses used to derail fitness goals. Excuses are the enemy of fitness goals. Don't make excuses; formulate ways to achieve your fitness goals. The power of positive thinking is a key part of any goal setting exercise. Visualize why you are striving toward these benchmarks. Picture that new physically fit you, running on the beach or playing with the kids.
2. Write It down
Put pen to paper and write those fitness goals down. While the reasons are not totally clear, it is a fact that if a person writes down a goal they are two to three times more likely to achieve that goal. Writing your fitness goals down is like making a contract with yourself to accomplish these items. Be sure to write the goals in a detailed and positive manner.
3. Present Tense Goals
The goals should not be vague. For example, sometimes a person will state, "I will lose weight." This goal is entirely too vague and not time sensitive. A better way to state a fitness goal would be, "I will lose twenty pounds in the next three months." This gives you a present tense time frame and also states a definitive goal. Include an actual date, and the restated goal makes achievement much more likely and probable.
4. Tell Friends and Family
People are more likely to attain certain fitness benchmarks if their friends and family know what they are trying to accomplish. These goals should not exist in a vacuum where no one else knows about them. In addition, friends and family are excellent sources of support. Telling others about your goals will make them more real.
5. Be Realistic
Setting fitness goals like, "I will lose 100 pounds in the next three months" is not only unrealistic but unhealthy. Make the goals attainable and reasonable within proper health and time guidelines. A person can lose weight too quickly or work the body too hard. Take into account all the factors in your life such as work, family and friends. If these goals are too difficult, you will quickly lose interest and stop trying to implement your new fitness program.
