Rosacea is a chronic skin condition in adults characterized by red areas on your nose, cheeks and forehead. The exact cause of rosacea is unknown, according to the Mayo Clinic, but spicy foods, alcohol, stress and sunlight are just a few things known to trigger it. The Clinic also says rosacea flare-ups, if left untreated, can worsen. Here are specific steps on how to cure rosacea.
Step 1
Go to your family doctor and get a prescription for a topical medication, oral antibiotic or Isotretinoin. Topical medications like tretinoin are applied to the affected skin daily or as your doctor recommends. An oral antibiotic such as minocycline reduces your skin inflammation. Isotretinoin is a potent medication used to treat severe rosacea. It blocks your sebaceous glands from producing the oil on your face, according to the Mayo Clinic. Discuss with your doctor which treatment option is best for you.
Step 2
Visit your surgeon and schedule surgery to reduce the redness of your skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, your surgeon will use laser or small pulses of electricity to reduce your blood vessels, which dilate and lead to redness. The surgeon will also remove tissue from your face to make your skin look more aesthetically pleasing.
Step 3
Wash your face daily with a nonabrasive cleanser. This can help prevent rosacea flare-ups.
Step 4
Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 15 on your face daily. The sun can trigger your rosacea.
Step 5
Avoid hot drinks, alcohol, the sun and extreme temperatures. According to the Family Doctor website, this can also trigger your rosacea flare-ups.
