It can be difficult to separate the health from the hype when examining diet plans. When celebrity pitches and diet product manufacturers make you promises about fast and effective weight loss with little effort on your part, it can be too easy to believe those promises and buy into whatever they're selling. Unfortunately, weight loss doesn't have a magic bullet, and losing weight using diet aids, fad diets and products could actually hurt your weight in the long run. The proper way to lose weight involves planning and lifestyle changes for good.

Make a Plan

Before you begin your journey into weight loss, making a plan is your first step. A weight loss plan can be one that you've created on your own, or it could be one that you've read about. When creating or choosing your weight loss plan, ensure that it rests on solid weight loss principles, such as a healthy diet and daily exercise. Any plan that promises that you can lose a large amount of weight in a short amount of time is a fraud. Your plan should help you make small changes in your daily life that add up to big success on the scale, such as snacking on fruits and vegetables, eating less fat and drinking plenty of water.

High Nutrition, Low Calories

One pound of fat is equal to 3,500 calories. To lose that pound, you must create a daily deficit of 500 calories every day for one week, meaning you'll need to consume 500 calories less than you burn. A diet doesn't have to mean going hungry if you choose foods that are low in calories, but high in nutrition. Snacking on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein can help keep you on track and fuel your body properly, while still allowing you to follow a low calorie diet.

Add Exercise

When a diet plan promises that it can help you lose weight without exercise, it should be a red flag that the diet is not a long-term plan. Simply put, you should be getting at least 30 to 60 minutes of exercise each and every day. When you add exercise to an already low-fat, low-calorie diet, your body becomes a more efficient calorie-burning machine to expedite your results in a safe and healthy way. What's more, exercise can help strengthen your heart and body for better overall health, along with your weight loss.

Be Safe

When you see results on the scale, you might be tempted to cut even more calories and work out more vigorously. But you should know that there's a safe and unsafe way to lose weight. You should never cut your calories below 1.200 per day if you're a woman and 1,500 per day if you're a man. Remember that your body needs the proper fuel to continue your progress, so avoid fads, starving your body or pushing yourself too hard.
