In virtually every level of women's volleyball, court dimensions are the same as they are for men. Women's volleyball players need to be aware of the boundaries' location and where the ball can not be played. The women's volleyball court has different zones and various lines to help regulate play and enforce rules.
Dimensions
The Women's volleyball court is 60 feet long and 30 feet wide. A center line is drawn down the middle of the court so each end line is 15 feet from the net. The net extends between each sideline and is 39.4 inches wide. The net is 7 feet and 4 1/4 inches from the ground in women's play. This is significantly shorter than the net in men's play, which stands 7 feet and 11 5/8 inches from the floor.
Zones And Lines
The volleyball court is separated into various zones. Two zones are on each side of the net with one zone on each side of the attack line. The attack line is drawn through each side of the court and creates the front row and back row zones. The line is 9 feet, 10 inches from the center line. Since there are six players on each team, three players are positioned in the front row and three in the back. The attack line, sometimes called the 10-foot line, indicates the boundary where players positioned behind it can play the ball. Players rotate clockwise every time your team regains service. There is also a free zone on the court's perimeter where players are permitted to play the ball. The free zone needs to be a minimum of 9.8 feet wide. Every line on the court is 2 inches wide.
Rule Applications
The boundary line surrounding the area inside the free zone is a part of the volleyball court. Each time a ball lands on this line, it is considered in and counts a point or sideout for one of the teams. An antenna is on each sideline extending from the top of the net. The ball cross the net between these lines is legal. If the ball goes over top of the antenna, hits it directly or goes outside of it, the ball is out of play and a point or sideout is awarded to the opposition.
Beach Regulations
Beach volleyball is typically played on a sand surface. The sand is required to be flat, uniform and level. The beach volleyball court has two sidelines and two endlines but lacks the center line found in indoor volleyball. The width of the lines is also different. Each line can range between 2 and 3 3/4 inches. The Federation Internationale de Volleyball created the current court dimensions for beach volleyball doubles in 2001. The court is required to be 52.5 feet long by 26.2 feet wide.
