Verelan, also known as verapamil, belongs to a family of drugs referred to as calcium channel blockers. They are used to treat angina (chest pain), hypertension (high blood pressure) and some heart rhythm disorders. These drugs relax the muscles of the heart and its blood vessels. Common Side Effects
The most common side effects of verelan include headache, constipation, dizziness, flu-like symptoms such as fever and chills, sore throat, indigestion, diarrhea, sinus infections, runny nose and body pain.
Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects you should report to your doctor or to a health care professional immediately include chest pain, experiencing a heart attack or stroke, dizziness or fainting (both signs of low blood pressure), enlargement of breasts in men, irregular or slowed heart rate, severe water retention, difficulty breathing, hallucinating and signs of an allergic reaction, which includes swelling of your face, mouth and throat, hives and an unexplained rash.
Rare Side Effects
According to the experts at eMedTV, these side effects take place in fewer than 2 percent of patients taking verelan. They include nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, tremors or shaking, insomnia, sweating, blurred vision, impotence, muscle cramps, hair loss and drowsiness.
