Atenolol, also known as Tenormin, belongs to a family of drugs referred to as beta-blockers. These drugs control how blood flows through your veins and arteries, thus used in the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) and chest pain (angina). As with any prescription medication, there are possible side effects you need to be aware of while taking atenolol.
Common Side Effects
According to eMedTV.com, the most common side effects experienced by patients taking atenolol during clinical trials included fatigue, slower heart rate, cold feet and/or hands, being short of breath, low blood pressure, dizziness and depression.
Less Common Side Effects
In addition to the common side effects, eMedTV.com states that between 2 and 4 percent of patients also experienced the following during clinical studies: leg pain, feeling lightheaded, nausea, drowsiness, diarrhea, lethargy and an increase in the amount of dreams while sleeping.
Possible Side Effects
The following side effects were reported by health care practitioners upon completion of the clinical trials. According to eMedTV.com, these may be actual side effects or could be coincidental. However, they should still be reported to your doctor should you experience them. They include headaches, impotence, reversible hair loss, dry mouth, problems with your vision, unexplained rash and dry eyes.
Serious Side Effects
Report these side effects to your doctor immediately, as they may require emergency medical attention. These include sudden weight gain, sudden swelling, dizziness, fainting, decline in your condition if you are asthmatic, irregular heartbeat, confusion and chest pain.
