Facial exercises can help strengthen muscles in the jaw, cheeks, lips and tongue. These exercises can be beneficial for people who have trouble with speech, swallowing or other facial muscle weaknesses. Performing exercises that strengthen face muscles can also help tone facial skin and prevent sagging and fine lines that can make you look older.
The Pucker
Strengthening the lips and mouth muscles can help you enunciate better and gain more control over your speech. To perform this exercise, pucker your lips and hold for 5 seconds. Move your pucker from one side to the other 10 times. Tighten your lips and make small "m" sounds followed by "p" and "b" sounds. Perform each sound several times.
Blowing Kisses
Similar to the Pucker, the Blowing Kisses exercise strengthens the Orbicularis Oris and Modiolus muscles, which can help to reduce fine lines around your mouth. Pucker your lips as tight as you can and hold for as long as you can. You should start to feel the burn after about 10 seconds. Repeat several times.
The Smile
This exercise can also tighten the muscles around your mouth, jaw and neck. Try not to squint as you perform this exercise. First, smile, showing as much of your teeth and gums as you can. Hold this position for 5 seconds, then pucker. Repeat this exercise several times. You should be able to feel the muscles tighten in your neck and cheeks.
The O Exercise
To help strengthen the muscles in the jaw and face, open your mouth as wide as you can then purse your lips to make a small "o" shape. Repeat the exercise several times.
The Blowfish
This exercise works your buccinator, zygomatic arch and modiolus muscles which can help reduce cheek puffiness and add definition to your cheekbones. Start by filling your left cheek with as much air as it can hold. Slowly allow the air to escape from the left side of your lips. Repeat this action 10 times, then switch sides.
The Lid Squeeze
This exercise strengthens the orbicularis oculi muscles around your eyes and can help reduce under eye puffiness and firm your eyelids. Place the palms of your hands lightly over your closed eyes. The inner edges of your palms should rest lightly against the bridge of your nose. Inhale deeply and squeeze your eyelids shut, feeling them resist against your palms. Hold the position for about 5 seconds. Exhale and release your eyelids.
