Breathing exercises that burn calories are designed to help you speed up your metabolism as well as improve your calorie burning abilities. While most breathing exercises done in isolation will not help you lose weight, performing breathing exercises prior to, during and after aerobic exercise will help maximize your calorie burning ability. According to Orato, increasing the amount of oxygen that enters your bloodstream will speed up your metabolism, causing you to burn calories quicker and keep off excess weight.
Humming Breath Exercise
This humming exercise is designed to increase the amount of oxygen in your body as well as burn calories. Sit up straight in a char with your feet flat on the floor. Exhale until there is no air left in your lungs. From here, relax your stomach muscles and inhale as deeply as possible. As you start to exhale, make a humming sound with your mouth, tightening your abdominal muscles and pushing the air and sound out for as long as possible. Repeat for two to three minutes.
Abdominal Breathing Exercise
This breathing exercise is designed to improve blood flow as well as your body's internal rhythm. Sit down with your back straight and feet on the floor. Place one hand on your abdomen and your other hand on your chest. From this position, exhale through your mouth and inhale entirely through your nose. Hold the breath for a count of seven seconds before exhaling for an eight count. Once you think you have released all the air in your lungs, tighten your abdominal muscles and release the remaining air. Perform this four times before resting.
Alternate Nostril Breathing
This breathing exercise will help you burn calories as well as improve your ability to alternate breathing between your nostrils. Sit down on the floor, placing your right thumb on your right nostril. With your right nostril closed off, breathe slowly through your left nostril, keeping your back straight and abdominal muscles tight. Once you have fully exhaled through the left nostril, close the nostril and open the right nostril, releasing air through your right nostril. Repeat this exercise, alternating between nostrils until fatigued.
Bellows Breathing Exercise
This breathing exercise is designed to increase energy levels as well as your metabolism. Sit up with your back straight and feet on the floor. Keeping your mouth closed, breath in and out of your nose as quickly as you can. If you are doing it correctly, you will feel tension in your neck, abdomen and chest muscles. Start the exercise by performing it for 15 seconds straight. As you improve, add five seconds each time you perform the breathing exercise.
