A golf swing has many components. One of the most important aspects is how grip the golf club. With so many other things to worry about during a golf swing, this detail often becomes overshadowed and is rushed or done incorrectly. Get into the habit of going through the gripping routine. Spend a few minutes simply gripping your club repeatedly to ensure that you are holding the club properly every time.

Step 1

Hold the club with your right hand, if you are a right-handed golfer, where the grip meets the shaft. Hold the club out in front of you. Bring your left arm up with the palm facing you and fingers pointing to the right.

Step 2

Position the golf club grip between the first set of knuckles and the top of your palm. Allow for some space between your pinkie finger and the butt of the golf club

Step 3

Curl your left-hand middle, ring and pinkie fingers around the grip, keeping the grip firmly positioned in the palm. Every part of the underside of these fingers should be making contact with the grip.

Step 4

Roll your left thumb onto the top of grip so that the thumb is pointing down toward the clubhead, still holding the club with your right hand and keeping it stable. The entire underside of the thumb should be firmly pressed against the grip. Curl your left index finger around the grip much like the other three fingers.

Tips and Warnings

  • Depending on the type of grip you prefer, you can interlock the left index finger with the right pinkie. Another method is to simply lay the right pinkie onto the fold between the left index and middle finger. A final method is to simply slide your right hand up against your left hand, making the left index finger and right pinkie touch on their outsides. You can draw lines onto your hand or glove as a guide as to where to position the grip. This is legal. If you are a left-handed golfer, perform the inverse of these steps.
