Some people associate meat with red beef, but low-calorie lean meats are available for those who are following a diet plan. The best lean protein available is fish. Fish also contains omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce bad cholesterol levels and improve heart health. Healthy fish include salmon, mackerel, tuna and trout. Poultry is also a good protein source. Poultry products with low-fat content include turkey, chicken, duck or pheasant. The healthiest way to cook these foods is broiled or baked. Frying foods increases fat and calories, so avoid these methods when dieting.
Vegetables
Vegetables are the main source for any dieter who is counting calories and trying to lose weight. Vegetables are also the main source for healthy vitamins and minerals needed for cellular reactions. The best low-calorie plant source contains vitamin C, K and A. Broccoli also contains proteins, B vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids. A spear of broccoli only contains approximately 10 calories. Other low-calorie vegetables are tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach, romaine lettuce and celery. Vegetables are good side-dishes with main meals and they can be eaten as a low-calorie snack. When cooking vegetables, avoid adding butter or creams. These are commonly added to vegetables, but they lead to a severe increase in calories.
Fruits
Some fruits are high in sugar so they are not helpful to those counting calories and attempting to lose weight. However, fruits are a good snack and source of vitamins. Fruits low in calories provide a sweet, healthy snack that provide a good source of energy for the mind and body. Fruits like grapes, cherries and apricots are good snacks to munch on in between meals. Melons, peaches and grapefruit can be eaten as a part of a healthy breakfast. Do not add sugar to fruits, since this increases the amount of calories in the dish.
