Infertility is defined as a couple being unable to conceive after one year of frequent, unprotected intercourse. Infertility can affect both men and women. Some people choose to look into natural and alternative therapies before approaching invasive treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). There are natural herbs available that have aided fertility for men and women.
D-chiro-inositol
D-chiro-inositol (DCI) is a member of the vitamin B family, as defined by the FDA, and is also abundant in buckwheat ferrinetta. Some forms of D-chiro-inositol are made from natural pinitol, which is extracted from pine trees. A study in 2002 at the Medical College of Virginia on lean women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) concluded that D-chiro-inositol reduces circulating insulin, decreases serum androgens and ameliorates some of the metabolic abnormalities (increased blood pressure and hypertriglyceridemia) of Syndrome X. PCOS is a condition that can affect women's fertility and is defined by the symptoms of polycystic ovaries, hirsutism, acne, anovulation, infertility and irregular periods.
Chasteberry
Chasteberry can be taken for cases of infertility due to irregular ovulation. Chasteberry increases the production of luteinizing hormone, which boosts the secretion of progesterone during the luteal phase (last 14 days) of the menstrual cycle. Chasteberry also suppresses the production of prolactin, which is a lactation hormone. These effects make the body's hormonal environment more receptive to ovulation.
Essential Fatty Acids
Essential fatty acids such as fish oils, primrose or borage oil can be taken daily by women to promote healthy functioning of the uterus. Essential fatty acids also help regulate hormone production.
Bee Propolis
Bee propolis can be taken by women who suffer from endometriosis. According to the Encyclopedia of natural cures, supplementing with 500 mg of bee propolis twice a day for six months significantly increased the pregnancy rate in a group of women with infertility and mild endometriosis. The exact function and effect of bee propolis is unknown, warranting further research.
Treatments for Men
L-carnitine is an amino acid that is naturally occurring. According to the "Encyclopedia of Natural Cures," numerous studies have shown that L-carnitine can improve sperm function and enhance male fertility. The "Encyclopedia of Natural Cures" also states that studies have found benefits from vitamins E and C for improving sperm count and activity. Panax ginseng can be taken to improve sperm function. Vitamin B12 deficiency can reduce sperm counts and lower sperm mobility, so a vitamin B12 supplement can improve fertility in men who suffer from abnormal sperm production.
