What Are Weight Plates?

Weight plates are often used in fitness centers and gyms to increase the amount of weight to be lifted when using free weights. They are an essential part of most weight rooms.

Olympic Barbell

Weight plates are often used on the ends of an Olympic or weightlifting bar. Together the weight plates and bar make up what is called a "barbell."

Sizes

Weight plates come in several different sizes, with the most common sizes being: 2.5 lb., 5 lb., 10 lb., 25 lb. and 45 lb. Most weight plates also include measurement in kilograms.

Materials

Weight plates are usually made from metal or vinyl-covered concrete.

Balance

When using weight plates on a bar, it's very important to have a balanced weight amount on either side of the bar. For example, if a 10 lb. plate is on one side of the bar, only use a 10 lb. plate on the other side of the bar.

Bars

Most fitness facilities have standard-size weight plates that fit on an Olympic size bar. Common bar lengths are 5, 6 and 7 feet, with the weight of the bar being anywhere from 20 to 45 lb. Some weight plates are made specifically for a 1-inch-thick bar. These are often found in home gym equipment.
