Triathlons consist of three individual sports -- swimming, cycling and running -- combined into one event. During the cycling section of the competition, triathletes need specialized clothing and a triathlon bike, commonly referred to as a tri bike, to maximize aerodynamics, speed and time. During 2009, companies such as Quintana Roo, Giant, Fuji and Cervelo produced the top triathlon bikes.
Quintana Roo Tequilo
The Tequilo from Quintana Roo was among the best entry-level triathlon bikes during 2009, according to Slowtwitch. Priced at $1,600 in 2009, the Tequilo is made with an aluminum frame with a "long and low" geometry for proper body position and aerodynamics. Additional features to the Tequilo include Shimano components, aero seat tube and post, adjustable chain stay lengths and faired rear wheel for improved performance. The Tequilo can accommodate 650c wheels, making it ideal for shorter triathletes.
Giant Trinity Alliance 0
Tri Gear Review rated the Giant Trinity Alliance 0 as one of the best triathlon bikes for 2009 for a combination of the frame technology and upgraded features. The hand-formed composite and aggressively shaped aluminum on the Alliance maximize stiffness for a smooth, fast ride. Key upgrades on the Alliance include Shimano Dura-Ace components, with speed bar end shifters on the Vision TriMax aero bars and a rear derailleur. As of 2009, the Giant Trinity Alliance 0 sold for $4,500.
Fuji D-6
The Fuji D-6 was among the top triathlon bikes of 2009, according to "Bicycling" magazine. The D-6 is available in seven sizes to accommodate your body size and riding style, which can ultimately improve performance. An adjustable saddle-clamping mechanism allows you to change the seat angle from 74 to 80 degrees to maximize aerodynamics, while the high-modulus carbon composite frame and fork provide a stiff, fast ride. With the SRAM components, the D-6 sold for $4,500, as of 2009.
Cervelo P2
Cervelo specializes in triathlon bikes and the Cervelo P2 was among the best in 2009, according to Tri Gear Review. With a price of $2,800 in 2009, the P2 is a midrange triathlon bike that includes enough features to compete in triathlon world championships. Dan Empfield, founder and editor of Slowtwitch, said, "No upgrades are required. Slap on a set of race wheels and you're ready to win Kona."
