Physical education plays an important role in a child's learning environment. Gym teachers are responsible for teaching students healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Lessons taught in gym class go beyond just the ability to catch a ball or run a mile. Gym teachers are responsible for helping students in a variety of ways, including social skills and motor skill development. Gym teacher activities center around a variety of lifelong lessons for students.

Fitness for Life

Activities in gym class should be designed to encourage a lifetime of fitness in students. Gym teachers should offer instruction on healthy eating habits and the importance of physical activity on a regular basis. Students should be aware that maintaining a healthy lifestyle can prevent disease and obesity. Teachers can review problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle and encourage activities such as running, riding a stationary bike and swimming, which can be performed at all stages of life.

Risk Avoidance

Gym teachers should plan lessons that teach students how to engage in physical activity without putting their safety at risk. Students should learn how to properly perform exercises. Students should also be aware of the risk of injury, how to prevent injury and how to avoid too much exercise. Teachers can explain specific injuries to children and how they will affect their lifestyles and abilities to enjoy the activities they normally do.

Social Development

Physical education classes allow students to engage with each other, and social interaction should be encouraged. Team activities provide more social benefits to students than individual exercise. Social skill development can carry over into other classes and students can also learn to apply these skills in situations outside the classroom. Social skill development teaches students how to get along and support each other. Social skill development activities should include cheering classmates on, shaking hands and congratulating each other after a game or activity.

Motor Skills

Motor skills development frequently occurs in physical education, especially in younger students. Motor skills development helps students in their daily lives. Students should be able to demonstrate their ability to run, hop, jump, skip, gallop, slide, leap, bend, twist, push, pull, stretch, throw, kick and catch. Students should also be able to improve hand-eye coordination during gym class.

Other Skills

Physical education teachers should also focus on movement and rhythmic development, problem solving and communication skills. Gym teachers can also demonstrate how to manage stress and pay close attention during class.
