Eye infections may result from different types of bacteria, viruses and fungi. They may cause discomfort, redness, swelling and irritation, but these symptoms may disappear without treatment. Some infections may require medication to prevent complications. However, some people try to avoid medications if possible, choosing herbal remedies instead. Prior to starting an herbal remedy, consult with your doctor, and she will help you weigh the risks and benefits that come with herbal supplements.

Examination

Before your doctor can help you determine the best use of herbal supplements, she will need to examine your eyes. She will use a special microscope, called a slit lamp, designed to examine your eyes. Your doctor will not typically need to dilate your eyes when evaluating an eye infection. She will diagnose the type of infection and look for the source of the infection. For example, viral eye infections do not typically respond to medicinal treatments and often have to resolve on their own, and knowing this information will help your doctor determine treatment options.

Herbal Supplements

Eye infections will only resolve with medications such as antibiotics, anti-virals or anti-fungals. Herbs such as bilberry and flaxseed cannot treat the infection itself, but these herbs have anti-inflammatory properties that may help relieve symptoms. If your doctor recommends one of these remedies or a number of other anti-inflammatory supplements, she will tell you the proper dosage and when to stop using the remedy.

Complications

Certain eye infections, such as uveitis, may cause damage or loss of vision if not treated properly. Also, an infection such as orbital cellulitis, which results from an infection of the tissues around the eye, may lead to serious, life-threatening complications without immediate treatment. If you have irritation, swelling or other symptoms of infection, contact your eye doctor for an evaluation.

Considerations

Discuss herbal remedies with your doctor before starting a regimen. Your doctor can help you determine if the herb may have any adverse effects, such as interactions with your medications or other health conditions. If your doctor determines that an herbal supplement may help ease your symptoms, contact your doctor if your condition worsens or if your symptoms do not improve within a few days.
