Losing weight can be a challenging process. Fighting the bulge takes more than just will power to reach your goals. A combination of diet changes and becoming more physically active is a starting point for long-term weight loss. There are several other things you can do to boost weight loss and keep it off. Staying on track involves finding a weight-loss plan that can work daily and is easy to stick to.

Exercise

The key to weight loss always comes back to exercise. This is the main component that you need to carry out during your weight-loss journey. Even if you are at your desired weight level, you still need to burn calories to avoid weight gain. You need to burn more calories than you consume to lose weight. Getting 30 minutes of exercise and physical activity five days a week can help you lose weight. If you find yourself not seeing the results you would like with your weight loss, you may have to step up your physical activity. This means adding more intense cardio to your workout, such as running, which can burn up to 986 calories an hour, and swimming laps, which burns up to 511 calories an hour.

Diet

If you want to lose weight, you may need to make changes to your diet. If you choose to follow a diet that excludes certain foods, you may be at risk for temptation. It is important to follow a balanced diet with foods from all of the main food groups, including vegetables, fruit, low-fat dairy, beans, lean meats and nuts. Choose foods from all of the foods groups in moderation and keep your calorie count between 1,500 and 2,000 calories per day. Avoid preparing foods in saturated oils, and keep your sodium intake to a minimum. Replace processed and sugary snacks with fresh fruits and vegetables between meals when you are hungry.

Lifestyle Changes

If you really want to lose weight and see changes in your life, make positive lifestyle choices. This begins with reducing or eliminating alcohol. Alcohol can cause havoc on your body -- especially your liver and kidneys. Your liver plays an important role in processing fat and toxins out of your body. When you drink, you are at a higher risk for fatty liver and cirrhosis of the liver. Fatty liver can also be caused by making bad food choices with sugary and high-fat food intake. Your kidneys can also be affected by alcohol consumption. Your kidneys help process waste out of your body, and if they are compromised by diabetes or alcoholism, it can compromise your health and your weight loss. If you smoke, you should stop. Smoking puts extra strain on your heart and lungs, making it stressful to exercise your body.

He will be able to do a thorough physical examination to determine if there is an underlying cause that could be stalling your weight loss, such as diabetes, insulin resistance or hypothyroidism. He will also be able to recommend a weight-loss program tailored to your specific medical needs.
