Heinz 57 Steak Sauce debuted in 1911, when the company introduced it as Beefsteak Sauce. Since then, it has undergone several name changes, the latest being Heinz 57 Sauce. The tomato-based sauce is a zesty addition to steak, chicken or pork.

Nutrient Information

With only 20 calories per tablespoon, Heinz 57 Sauce is a low-calorie food, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s labeling definition of 40 calories or less. Heinz can’t call it a low-sodium food, however, as a serving contains 190 milligrams of sodium -- 50 more milligrams than the FDA’s definition. Each tablespoon of the sauce provides 4 grams of carbohydrates and 4 percent of the daily vitamin A requirement, based on a 2,000-calorie diet.

Controversial Ingredient

This sauce does contain high fructose corn syrup, a controversial ingredient the FDA says does “not qualify for a 'natural' labeling term,” according to the Natural News website. Other ingredients include malt vinegar, raisin concentrate, soybean oil, caramel color and natural flavorings. If you are sensitive to gluten, avoid this product or limit your intake. Caramel color, made from caramelized sugar, may or may not contain gluten, says the Food Facts website.
