A variety of businesses require, or recommend, that their employees obtain a first aid certificate. This is especially true for health care workers, lifeguards and anyone else who may be required to come to the aid of someone in need. Obtaining a first aid certificate can be done in a variety of ways, including online, through your employer or a local class. Most classes combine CPR and first aid.

Online

Step 1

Search for an accredited organization that provides first aid certification. Accredited online organizations include the Red Cross, International CPR Institute, Professional Training Institute and CPR Today.

Step 2

Pay for the first aid certification, which covers the online classes, videos, testing and actual certification papers.

Step 3

Complete the online classes for first aid certification and then take the test. After you've passed, you'll be awarded the official certification. Some online organizations allow you to print the certification, while others send it in the mail or do both.

In Person

Step 1

Visit the American Red Cross Online Training website. Click on "This Link," which will direct you to current local class offerings.

Step 2

Enter your zip code. Select your course category, format, such as classroom only, and the date range to complete the course. Press "Find Courses."

Step 3

Browse through the available course times and locations and select the test day that works best for you. Click on the course option and register for the class. If you are not a returning user at American Red Cross, you'll be asked to sign up.

Tips and Warnings

  • All first aid certificates expire after 24 months. However, it's recommended that those in the health care field recertify at least once a year.
