Nebulizers are used to turn liquid medicines into a mist, which makes them easier to inhale. They are most commonly used for the treatment of asthma. If you have asthma and use a nebulizer, your asthma medications will be prescribed in liquid form. Your nebulizer will generally include an air compression machine, although ultrasonic nebulizers may also be used (while quieter, these devices are also more expensive). These devices allow you to inhale your medication more easily and effectively than with small plastic inhalers.
Step 1
Connect the air hose to the nebulizing machine. This will either be an air compressor (more common) or a device that uses ultrasonic waves. Either device will be need to be plugged into the wall and will have a nozzle in the front for the air hose.
Step 2
Fill the medicine cup with your medication. The medicine cup will be a small device with a miniature funnel in it. Only add as much of your medication as is indicated on your prescription.
Step 3
Connect the air hose and the mouthpiece to the medicine cup. The air hose will attach on the side of the medicine cup with the large end of the funnel, and the mouthpiece attaches to the other side.
Step 4
Take the mouthpiece and put it inside your mouth. Breathe through your mouth until all the medicine is gone from the medicine cup (typically 10 to 15 minutes).
Step 5
Disconnect the air hose, medicine cup and mouthpiece. Wash all pieces with water and let air dry.
