Volleyball knee pads for kids come in varying sizes, shapes and colors. They all, however, serve one purpose: to provide a safe landing while playing volleyball. The type and brand you choose is a personal decision, but deciding to wear them is an essential part of playing safe.
Purpose
Volleyball knee pads are meant to protect players from injuries. Kids who play volleyball can expect to dive, skid and kneel to make a play --- often at high speeds, making for a hard landing. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reported that in 2007 there were 97,000 volleyball-related injuries in children under 14 years old. Wearing knee pads is one of several AAOS injury-prevention tips.
Type
There are several types of knee pads. For example, retailer Sports Authority carries three different versions of volleyball knee pads from manufacturer Mizuno. The Mizuno T1 volleyball knee pads feature a ½-inch foam pad in five sections. The LR6 style, meanwhile, has cushioning designed to increase medial and lateral protection for knee, and to protect the patella. The VS-1 is similar to the LR6, with an added ventilation system and a blend of fabrics. The type of knee pads you choose depend on your personal comfort and design preference.
Basic Design
Volleyball knee pads are different then knee pads for other sports, such as biking or rollerskating. Rollerskating knee pads are typically made of a harder material, such as plastic, and attached to the knee with a Velcro strap. Volleyball knee pads are made from soft cloth that must be pulled over the foot and leg. There is a soft pad that cushions the knee. The designs vary in thickness, cushion shape and materials and color.
Buying Knee Pads for Kids
Many manufacturers make volleyball knee pads for kids. The brand you choose should be based on comfort and the protection your child needs rather than a desire to wear a specific brand. The style and type of protection varies between brands, even within a brand. Be sure to purchase knee pads sized for kids. If your child is taller and bigger than average, it may be appropriate to purchase adult-sized pads. Never purchase volleyball knee pads --- or any other athletic equipment --- figuring that your child will grow into them; buy equipment based on her current needs.
