Pomegranate juice contains potent antioxidants and may offer anti-atherosclerotic benefits to keep your arteries from hardening. Some people use it to prevent or treat certain health disorders, as it has been shown to suppress inflammation and inhibit prostate and breast cancer growth. It also appears to provide benefit to some patients with cardiovascular disorders. It may, too, interfere with certain medications, but it has not fully been proven. Consult your doctor before stopping the use of prescribed medication.

Statins

Pomegranate juice can lower blood pressure. Because it is so potent and effective, it may interfere with other medicines for hypertension, like statins. Pomegranate juice and grapefruit juice may inhibit the effectiveness of statins, a group of drugs that lowers "bad" cholesterol, which is also known as low-density lipoproteins or LDL cholesterol. When statins are inhibited, it may cause fatigue and may compromise your cardiovascular health. Pomegranate juice may also cause adverse reactions with antidepressants and other cholesterol-lowering drugs and heart medications. Consult your physician about drinking pomegranate juice if you are currently taking prescription medicine.

Allergic Reactions

In rare cases, people get noticeable allergic reactions to pomegranate juice. They typically get reactions, because they apply it directly onto their skin. Some reactions include swelling, itching, runny nose and restricted breathing.

Diabetes

Pomegranate juice contains high amounts of fruit sugar, but it is comparable to other fruit juices. These fruit sugars, however, may cause adverse reactions in diabetics. If you are diabetic, you may want to limit your consumption of pomegranate juice. Consider diluting your pomegranate juice with water or add a bit of pomegranate juice to your plain yogurt. Another alternative is to take pomegranate extract supplements.

Pesticides

Drink organic pomegranate juice if it is mixed with other thin-skinned fruits like apples and berries so that you do not experience any side effects of the synthetic pesticides and fertilizers that may be used on non-organic pomegranates. Such side effects may include attention deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactive disorder, Parkinson's disease, autism and other mental, hormonal or carcinogenic effects.
