A certified fitness instructor in Canada can work for herself, for a recreation center, health club, spa, gym or corporate client. She must be personable and have the ability to lead groups through a fitness class. Organizational skills and fitness skills of her own must also be part of the equation.
Step 1
Register on the Canadian Fitness Education Services website to take the courses necessary for certification. CFES offers courses for weight training instructor, advanced weight training instructor, aquafit instructor and group exercise instructor. Length of the courses of study varies depending on the facility and course offered.
Step 2
Visit the National Fitness Leadership Alliance website to find the appropriate certification agency in your area of the country, since the process can vary slightly from province to province. NFLA partners across Canada offer specialties such as group fitness, fitness for older adults, aquatic fitness, adapted fitness, trainer of fitness leaders and strength and resistance training.
Step 3
Visit the corresponding NAFLA website or phone the agency in your area and ask how to take the necessary testing to become certified in Canada.
Visit the Can-Fit-Pro website to sign up for its fitness instructor certification program. You can register online, by mail, by fax or by telephone. Can-Fit-Pro is a membership-based fitness education provider that offers certifications, trade shows and conferences. Membership is $29 annually for fitness instructors, and must be kept up to retain your certification. Fees for full certification courses ranged from $399 to $513 in January 2011.
Tips and Warnings
- The certification exam consists of a practical and theoretical element, in which you must write a test and teach a simulated class.
