Though many sufferers might disagree, there really is no such thing as a common headache. Even mild ones usually trace back to specific causes. The pain that's dogging you might come from poor eyesight, tension, posture or a sinus infection. Tension headaches usually include soreness at the temples. Sinus headaches tend to get worse when you bend over. Until you can make a doctor's appointment to find the cause, try a few natural remedies to ease the problem temporarily.

Step 1

Apply pressure to the nerve at the top of your eye socket. If you run your finger along the ridge of bone under your eyebrow, you will feel a slight dent at the center. Press there with the tip of your finger for 10 seconds.

Step 2

Bend forward and massage the back of your head with medium pressure.

Step 3

Repeat the process of nerve pressure followed by massage to your head. Your brain will release endorphins in response, which are the body's natural painkillers.

Step 4

Soak a towel in hot water and apply to your neck and shoulder areas, or stand in a hot shower for a few minutes with the spray hitting you at that point.

Step 5

Try steam to relieve sinus pressure. Turn your shower on as hot as it will go, close your bathroom door, allow the steam to build up in the room, then sit and breathe it in through your nostrils.

Tips and Warnings

  • If your headache recurs after your other efforts, the cause might well be tension or poor posture. Consider what you generally do for extended hours in the course of your employment. If you hunch over a desk or keyboard all day, or hold a phone between your neck and shoulder for long stretches, your muscles can become knotted, decreasing your blood flow to your neck and head and causing spasms. Take breaks periodically to work the kinks out of your muscles.
  • Steaming out a sinus headache will only offer short-term relief. If you have a sinus infection, only antibiotics will cure it, so you should make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible. Many people confuse sinus headaches with migraines. If your headaches recur regularly and cause you nausea or sensitivity to light, you might be suffering from migraines and should see your doctor to discuss treatment. Frequent headaches might have serious health implications, so if they plague you often, contact your physician.
