The air, or Ollie, refers to a fundamental trick in the sport of skateboarding. The air involves jumping vertically with your feet positioned over the top of the skateboard. While airborne, manipulate the skateboard with your feet to execute flips and spins. Airs can be performed on flat ground as well as on skateboarding ramps. Ramps help to maximize your airtime for more difficult maneuvers. According to ESPN, ramp skaters often hold the skateboard to their feet during long distance aerial tricks.

Step 1

Slide your lead foot toward the front of the skateboard to cover the four bolts. Push the skateboard forward using the toes of your opposing foot. Place your pushing foot over the back four bolts as you reach a comfortable speed.

Step 2

Align your lead foot toward the middle of the skateboard to set up for the aerial trick. Position your back foot on the curved tail of the skateboard. Bend your knees to compress your skateboarding stance.

Step 3

Apply downward pressure with your back foot until the tail makes contact with the ground. Jump vertically as high as you can. Slide your front foot forward to ensure the skateboard remains parallel with the ground.

Step 4

Bend your knees to a 90-degree angle to maximize your airtime. Extend your arms to remain balanced throughout the aerial trick. Lower your eyes to the ground as the skateboard begins to descend.

Step 5

Absorb the impact of the landing by bending your knees. Practice this aerial technique on flat ground to get comfortable with the movements of your feet. Increase the height of your air with a small skateboarding ramp.
