The fastball is the "go to" pitch of most pitchers when they really need a strike. The ability of a pitcher to have pinpoint fastball control can mean the difference between a winning and losing record. Every pitcher is an individual and which factors help to control the fastball may differ from one to the next.
Step 1
Visualize the ball crossing the plate exactly where you want it to be, before you throw each pitch. See yourself hitting the catcher's mitt without him even having to move it.
Step 2
Practice different release points and stride lengths until you find a combination that gets your fastball where you want it consistently. Some pitchers have better control with a long stride and over the top release, while others do best with a short stride and three-quarter release.
Step 3
Focus on one, precise spot when you are on the mound, just before you throw your pitch. Choose one part of the catcher's mitt, such as a lace, and tunnel your vision into that one spot.
Step 4
Throw a four-seam fastball instead of a two-seam fastball, for better control and less lateral movement on the ball. Find the horseshoe pattern of seams on the ball, and place your index and middle fingers across the seams. The horseshoe curve will be on the right of your middle finger if you are a righty. Place your thumb underneath on no seam.
Tips and Warnings
- Move your feet to different areas of the rubber before you throw pitches to tinker with your location if it is not the best on any particular day.
