Pizza is typically high in carbohydrates because of all the flour the crust contains. However, you can prepare a pizza crust without flour and with far less carbohydrates to help you keep your carbohydrate intake within target. There are ways to have between 1.0 g and 12.6 g net carbs per serving, which is suitable for any low-carb diet and for people with diabetes. Net carbs, also called available carbohydrate, correspond to the amount of carb able to raise your blood sugar levels, and corresponds to the total carbohydrates minus the dietary fiber.

Eggplant

If you like the taste of eggplant, you will enjoy your pizza prepared with an eggplant crust. Slice an eggplant lengthwise and put the slices on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper and grill until cooked through. You will need to turn the eggplant so it can cook evenly. If you use a whole eggplant as a crust for your pizza, you will get 132 calories, 31.2 g carbohydrate and 18.6 g fiber, which corresponds to only 12.6 g net carbs.

Portobello Caps

Portobello mushrooms are very tasty and you can use the caps as a pizza crust to prepare mini-pizza. For example, if you eat two mini-pizzas prepared on portobello mushroom caps, the crust will provide you with 47 calories, 9.2 g carbohydrate and 2.7 g fiber, which is the equivalent of only 6.5 g net carbs.

Low-Carb Tortilla

There is a large variety of low-carb tortillas on the market that you can use to make a healthy low-carb thin-crust pizza. Low-carb tortillas provide on average 50 calories, 10 g carbohydrate and 6 to 7 g fiber, for a total of 3 to 4 g net carbs. Larger tortilla contains 80 calories, 18 g carbohydrate and 12 g fiber, which leaves about 6 g net carbs.

Cheese and Flax Seeds

For a surprisingly delicious low-carb pizza crust, mix 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese with 1/4 cup ground flax seeds and 2 beaten eggs. Add seasonings and a little bit of baking powder. Spread the dough on a baking sheet and bake about 15 minutes per side. You can use this crust to prepare a low-carb pizza. A slice corresponding to the sixth of the pizza crust has 163 calories, 2.4 g carbohydrate and 1.4 g fiber, which is the equivalent of 1.0 g net carbs.

Cauliflower and Cheese

Another easy recipe to prepare a low-carb pizza crust consists in mixing 1 cup cooked and mashed cauliflower with 1 cup shredded cheese and a beaten egg. Season to taste and bake 12 to 15 minutes before putting the ingredients of your pizza on the crust. A quarter of this crust contains 110 calories, 2.9 g carbohydrate and 0.7 g fiber, which corresponds to 2.2 g net carbs.
