Excess body fat can make your body appear round and soft. Developing lean muscle mass increases metabolism and helps your body burn fat efficiently. Shedding fat helps give your body a tight and toned shape. Contrary to popular belief, you cannot spot-reduce fat. If you want to lose fat from problem areas, you need to decrease your overall fat percentage. Adopt healthy lifestyle changes to lose fat effectively.
Strength Training
Engaging in strength training three to four days per week builds muscle and fires up the metabolism. Boosting your metabolism increases the amount of fat you burn per day, even when resting. Perform full-body workouts that include exercises like push-ups, lat pulldowns, lunges, squats, bicep curls and tricep dips. Execute each exercise for four sets of 12 repetitions. Lift with moderate to heavy resistance. Completing a set of 12 should be a challenge.
Cardiovascular Exercise
Cardiovascular exercise helps burn off the layers of fat that rest on top of the muscles. Perform cardiovascular workouts four to five days per week upon rising. Doing cardio on an empty stomach uses stored body fat as fuel, since the glycogen stores in your body have been depleted. Keep the intensity level low. Walk on the treadmill, go for a light jog or ride the stationary bike for 20 to 30 minutes.
Clean Eating
Eat clean to encourage fat loss. Clean eating means consuming foods that haven't been manipulated or processed. Avoid foods like boxed meals, pre-seasoned foods and frozen dinners that are loaded with sodium and chemical preservatives that can cause weight gain. Eat foods in their natural form like low-fat dairy, lean meats, cold-water fish, eggs, vegetables, healthy fats, whole grains and fruits.
Grazing
Eating five to six small meals helps keep your metabolism fired up throughout the day, facilitating fat loss. Digesting your meals burns calories, so grazing helps increase the number of calories you burn daily. Eating often also keeps you feeling full during the day, which helps prevent hunger and overeating.
