The Gyrotonic Method is an exercise system that aims to develop total body fitness through the use of specialized machines and routines. Most exercises and sports focus on a specific set of activities, and develop certain muscles at the expense of others. Others, like the Gyrotonic method, emphasize a holistic approach to fitness, by using the entire body, including major and minor muscles groups, joints and tendons.
History
Like Pilates, the Gyrotonic method is one man's invention: in this case, Romanian ex-ballet dancer Juliu Horvath, who developed the principles of Gyrotonics after injuries ended his dancing career. According to "Healing With Complementary and Alternative Therapies," he used his knowledge of dance, yoga, swimming and gymnastics to develop the Gyrotonic method, and then invented a series of machines to help work the body and joints in a specific, controlled pattern.
Methods
The Gyrotonic method is designed to improve strength, flexibility and range of motion. According to "The Ballet Companion" you work with an instructor who takes you through a series of stretching and toning exercises, based on circular movements. You use a Gyrotonic machine, which has a pulley system to offer gentle, varied resistance. The exercises are conducted with a focus on maintaining even, yoga-like breathing.
Claims
The original purpose of the Gyrotonic method was to help Horvath overcome his dance-related injuries, and the system is used extensively by dancers, and others who hope to alleviate injuries and strain. According to "Complementary Therapies in Rehabilitation," the results of a University of Miami study in 2000 showed the Gyrotonic method was effective in treating lower back problems. It is also a very safe exercise system, as it is done on a machine under the supervision of a trained instructor.
Cost and Availability
In "Power Up Pilates," author Steven Shipshide notes that Horvath maintains strict control over the Gyrotonic method, and personally supervises the training of instructors, so the equipment and methods have not spread as far as yoga or Pilates, for example. Since you need access to machines and an instructor it can be expensive, or you may struggle to find a trainer in your area.
