1. The Colon Super-Cleanse
A colonic is a method of colon cleansing in which a trained therapist inserts a tube into the rectum and then introduces warm, distilled water. Colonics are often used as a part of a detoxification program, as they help to remove toxins and built-up fecal matter in the large intestine. Colonics differ from enemas in that they cannot be performed with professional assistance and the fecal matter leaves the body through a tube during the session. Additionally, colonics work to cleanse the entire colon while enemas only cleanse the lower portion of the colon.
2. Why Would You Want One?
Yes, it may sound uncomfortable, but a colonic is one of the best things that you can do for your body. Over the years, chemicals, fecal matter and even yeast begins to build-up and form plaque on the walls of the colon. A colonic helps to break up and flush the build-up, relieving chronic constipation, symptoms of toxicity, yeast syndrome and improving absorption and elimination in general. The human body can hold between 5 and 40 lbs. of impacted fecal matter in the colon, so you can imagine how light and relieved you might feel after a colon cleanse.
3. Leave it to the Professionals
Colonic sessions generally take between 45 minutes and an hour. Throughout the process, a trained therapist is there to make you as comfortable as possible. Once the tube is inserted and the colonic begins, you will not see or smell the fecal matter at all, as it will be removed through the tube. Your therapist may massage your abdomen both to help release compacted feces and to make the experience more comfortable. You may feel pressure in the lower abdomen; however, you should not feel pain at any point. Once the tube is removed, you will be directed to the bathroom where you can release any excess water or stool.
4. Preparing Your Body
Most therapists recommend fasting evening before and the morning of your colonic so that your colon is free from excess fecal matter. Additionally, drinking plenty of water in the 48 hours before your cleansing will help to break up and eliminate compacted waste. Additionally, you should begin taking probiotics supplements the day of your colonic and continue for about 2 weeks afterwards, as a colon cleansing will also remove the healthy bacteria in your colon which helps to keep yeast under control and aids in digestion and elimination. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for dosage information.
5. Colonics Aren't for Everyone
While colonics are generally safe and do not cause side effects other than mild fatigue, it is important to consult your doctor before a colonic if you have blood vessel disease, cancer, heart problems, anemia or hemorrhoids. Additionally, colonics should not be administered to those with diverticular disease, Crohn's disease, colitis, hernia or to those who have had recent surgery.
