The first three years of your child's life are the most crucial to development. It is also the most dangerous time to lose weight due to poor nutrition, according to Healthy Children. It is important to know the signs and symptoms that could indicate that your baby is not getting the nutrition he needs.
Growth
Poor nutrition is one cause of failure to thrive, which your baby can be diagnosed with if she does not meet expected standards of growth. Although every baby is different, Kids Health states that children typically grow 10 inches and triple their birth weight in the first year of life. Your baby's doctor will chart her weight and height on a growth chart. If she is not getting the nutrition she needs, there may be a change in her growth patterns.
Milestones
If your baby is not meeting certain milestones, it may be a sign that he is not getting the nutrition that he needs. Every baby reaches milestones at a different pace, but you should notice that he follows natural progression, like rolling over, followed by sitting up, crawling and then standing. If your baby appears to lose the ability to do things he was able to do before, or if you are concerned that he is not reaching milestones for his age, talk to his doctor.
Eating Problems
If your baby has food sensitivities or eating problems, it may be a sign of low nutrition. Allergies or sensitivities to some foods, like cow's milk protein, can make it more difficult for her to get the nutrients she needs. If she has trouble eating due to a physical problem, such as a cleft lip or an illness, it could lead to nutrition problems.
Other Signs
Consistent irritability is another possible sign of low nutrition. Your baby may also be unable to make eye contact with you and show no interest in his surroundings. If you feel that your baby is not acting normally or if you suspect he is not eating enough, talk to his doctor. He may ask you about your baby's daily eating schedule or ask you to keep a detailed food diary.
